Bhandardara
If you’re visiting Shirdi and have a little extra time, you might want to take a trip to the serene hill village of Bhandardara, about 90 km away. Here, on the Pravara River, stands the historic Wilson Dam—built over a century ago and rising 150 metres above ground level. The dam has created the scenic Arthur Lake (also called Lake Arthur Hill or Bhandardara Lake), a calm, expansive water body surrounded by lush hills and fresh, invigorating air.
Bhandardara is one of Maharashtra’s hidden gems—filled with waterfalls, mountains, greenery, and a peaceful, almost untouched ambience. Just 10 km from the small village of Shendi, you’ll find the Randha Falls—a huge cascade on the Pravara River. During the rainy season, the falls roar to life, with not just one but two waterfalls flowing side by side, creating a breathtaking scene. They’re about 156 km from Pune and 177 km from Mumbai, but from Shirdi, it’s an easy day trip.
Another must-see is the Umbrella Falls, right below the Wilson Dam. As the name suggests, the water fans out in a perfect umbrella shape. These falls are seasonal and best seen between July and October—and they’re only about 500 metres from the Bhandardara bus station.
From Shirdi, you can make it to Bhandardara in just a couple of hours, and the journey itself—through winding roads, monsoon greenery, and fresh mountain air—is part of the charm.
